The tarpon will grow to be larger than 8 feet is size and can weigh more than a whopping 280 pounds. For this reason, the tarpon is sought after as one of the best saltwater game fish. Since the habitat for this fish is so close to the shore many fishermen even novices with no skill level are able to catch a tarpon.

If you have ever caught a one, then you are aware of the exhaustion that comes with catching a large fish like this. However; the exhaustion that comes with catching one is worth the thrill of the catch.

The tarpon is going to put up a fight when it catches on your line by conducting a number of jumps in the air that will have you in awe as your rod is bending and your reel is screaming from the force of the line. The only thing you can do is hold on tight. The best thing that you can do is work the fish in slowly as this will allow you to not become too exhausted right away while at the same time tiring out the fish from fighting you and jumping to get free. When fishing for tarpon, the Outdoor Adventures Guide recommends the dollar crab. The small crab that is live and is about 2 inches in length will be hooked through one end of the shell and then underneath to a swimmer leg. There are other baits that will work well for the tarpon such as pin fish, herrings and of course the pilchards. It’s quite attracted to the live mullet as well. You can use fly fishing flies to attract the it but will need to know just what type of fly is best used to attract the tarpon.

Catching a one that is over 100 pounds is pretty uncommon but can be done. The females are generally over 100 pounds and this fish does not mature until its 8 to 10 years in age. They can live for up to 60 years. You want to be careful when handling the tarpon as the large mouth is turned to face upwards while the lower portion of the jaw has a bony plate. The dorsal fin is much longer than others and will reach nearly to the end of the tail .

For those times when you’re really cooking outdoors… I’m not talking about cooking on your outdoor electric grills or your hibachi mini grill, but when you’re cooking your food over a real camp fire, here’s a little technique that’s kind of fun to try, especially if you’re cooking with kids.  Tell them that you’re going to cook their food in MUD!

If you happen to be camping in an area where the dirt is somewhat like clay, here’s what you do to bake a potato.  Take the potato and poke some holes in it with a fork or sharp knife.  Next, wrap aluminum foil around it.  Now, get some muddy clay and encase the entire potato in a layer of mud about one half inch thick, and then bury it in the hot coals of your camp fire.  Don’t rest it on top, but bury it completely in the coals.

The mud will protect the potato from getting scortched, and it will recieve good, even heat from all sides.  Leave it in the fire for about an hour before removing it VERY carefully.  It will be HOT.  You will now be able to crack off the baked on shell of mud and peel back the foil to reveal a perfectly baked potato.  Now THAT is outdoor cooking!

As carp fishing becomes more and more popular in the United States, it might become easier for new “carpers” to begin finding good fishing gear specialized towards carp.  But for right now, carp is still sometimes seen as a lesser fish for anglers than bass, trout, walleye, or catfish – and finding some good carp fishing gear can be difficult when many areas consider carp more of a pest and invasive species than a legitimate sports fish.
