This Hamptons park has what is referred to as the outer beach camping area. There are 100 camping spots ($30 per night) but there is a twist. You have to arrive in a self contained vehicle, meaning you have to sleep in your rig. No tents allowed. To get out on the beach you need a permit ($40 for non residents), which in effect is a license to drive on the beach. With this comes a lot of regulations to be sure you are being safe and prudent. The vehicle must be able to handle driving on sand and you will have to have a lot of safety equipment. All of this protects the local police from having to constantly come and rescue people that would otherwise think it should be fine to drive their Honda civic on the beach.

Bizarre but fantastic is my personal view of the holidays seaside resort of La Grande Motte, near Montpellier, in the Languedoc. When the resort was built back in the 1960’s it was state of the art, in fact down right futuristic. There is a real James Bond feel to the crazy design of the buildings created by Jean Balladur. It looks perhaps somewhat dated now but it is nevertheless impressive with its white curvy buildings.

Even if you don’t fancy staying in one of the apartments it’s definitely worth a day trip. Driving around the quite boulevards you will feel like you’re in another world, certainly another era. And the beach itself is a blue flag, pristine sun worshippers paradise. I was especially impressed with the large number of ice cream parlours offering delicious flavours of all kinds. Mmm yummy. Ok, perhaps that’s enough of my personal eating habits!
