DIY: Tile Installation Tips
Installing a new tile floor can seem like a daunting task, but laying floor tile is a fairly uncomplicated job. Doing the tile work yourself saves you money and ultimately makes you more satisfied with the final results. A ready supply of knowledgeable professionals at your local home improvement stores should be able to provide you with hands on product application demonstrations and help you find all the proper tools for the job.
The most important step in ensuring the floor tile will lay flat and fit right is to be sure to take the time for all the necessary subfloor preparations in order for the tiles to form a nice tight seal. Since floor tiles are probably going to raise the height of the current floors, any molding and floor trim should be removed and the toilet as well if this is a bathroom project. Having followed these simple steps will make everything match up evenly when the task is complete.
Laying floor tile directly over hard wood, particle board or chip board is not recommended because woods are commonly susceptible to warping, swelling and contracting as the temperatures and moisture levels fluctuate. Ideally subfloors should be exterior grade, double layered plywood and sealed with a waterproofing layer, like latex thin set mortar to prevent any moisture damage from happening in the future. If the subfloor is concrete, the slab must be free of dust, cleaned of any adhesives or paints and be completely dry.
For pitting, cracking or holes in the concrete, carefully smooth with cement floor filler a minimum of twenty four hours before laying the tiles. To seal grout tile you will need to use a silicone caulk that resists mold and mildew for all joints and perimeters along the walls and cupboards before applying and smoothing the grout. Simply let grouting set for fifteen to thirty minutes, and wipe clean.
