How to Hunt Squirrels with a Pellet Gun

Hunting squirrels with a pellet gun is often one of the first hunting experiences for those just beginning to learn to hunt. It doesn’t require a high level of skill or accessories and is generally accessible to most physical abilities. Pellet gun hunting is also particularly suited for this type of hunting because they are light, just the right caliber and dispatch the pray quickly and efficiently. Often shots are on a trajectory that will take the pellet away from the ground, so neighbors will also appreciate the limited range of a pellet gun.

Squirrels are often considered a problem for a number of reasons. Mainly as they live in semi suburban areas, they do not have any natural predators and therefore their population can grow freely. The Grey Squirrel is far more prevalent than the Red Squirrel. Red Squirrel numbers are in decline because Grey Squirrels carry squirrel pox which infects and kills the Reds. Squirrels also eat bird’s eggs and squat in bird nests and bird boxes and often bird lovers are only too glad to see their number culled.

Squirrels are easily hunted by either simply spotting them in trees or by luring them out into the open with nuts or bird food. Squirrels are territorial creatures and are quick to respond to the calls of other squirrels. Try clicking two coins together by holding them between your thumb and first finger with the bottom coin sticking out a little. Push down on the lower coin with your other thumb nail, letting it to snap back against the upper one. The click this action makes is similar to a squirrel call and may get them to come out into the open. Aim for the head, as shots to the body are often pointless when hunting with a pellet gun.

What to do with your squirrel once it is bagged? Well in some parts of the world squirrel’s loins are considered a delicacy so search the internet for some recipes. Don’t leave a squirrel carcass lying out in the open as this will only encourage other predators such as foxes to come into the area. Better still, use your dead squirrel as bait for other pests that can be shot with a pellet gun, such as crows, magpies and rooks.
