Installing a Screen Door

During the summer months it is important to install fly and mosquito screens on the main entrance doors to your home.

A number of options are available for different types of doors. For the traditional door you have the option to install a screen door in front of the existing door which can be either a permanent fixture or one that can be removed and stored during the off season. These doors although functional can be quite annoying as they are forever slamming shut against the frame. Additionally they are quite awkward to maneuver when trying to walk through both doors especially if carrying a tray.

An alternative to the above type is a screen door that operates somewhat like a curtain. The opening is split in the middle. No need to open a door, simply pull one of the curtains to one side and walk through. When the curtains settle down again, the leading edges meet and seal again. The leading edges have magnetic strips sewn into the fabric that attract each other to form the seal. This type of screen is particularly suitable for pets allowing them to walk in and out and you can rest assured that the screen will seal again.

Installation of the curtain system is simple, basically a rod placed at the head of the frame to hang the curtains. When not required they are easily removed and stored. One main advantage is no more noisy slamming doors.

Screens are also available for your patio doors. In this instance it consists of a sliding rigid screen held in a frame that is fixed to the inner side of the patio door main framing. It functions by opening the main patio door panel and sliding the screen panel into place. Similar systems are available for windows however they tend to be permanent fixtures.
