Media Representation of Older Women
In the United States, youth is touted as the physical ideal in the media. Although you may see articles in women’s magazines about aging gracefully or living to the fullest in your postmenopausal years, the advertising stands in sharp contrast. How many ads feature models over the age of 50, or for that matter over the age of 30? Advertisers would have us all believe that with a special cream or makeup we can all look like the 18 year old model in the advertisement. Over the past several years, advertisers have made some small advances such as the Dove ads featuring “everyday” women instead of models in their ads but seldom do ads feature any woman over the age of 50 selling beauty products. This may not be as powerful a buying demographic as the younger set, but as the median age in the US is increasing, it may be wise for advertisers to court a slightly older demographic.
