Styles Of Vintage Formal Dresses
A Formal Vintage Dress is one that looks back to a previous era in its style, material, design. Most experts agree that the term vintage refers to dress styles originating in the years from approximately 1920-1980. Gowns that have a style and design earlier then 1920 are considered antique rather than vintage. As with dresses of any age an original designer dress will come with quite a heavy price tag, where as a “knock-off” is much more affordable.
In the 1920′s women sought to achieve the most boyish figure possible, dropped waistlines and no tailoring to curves were the fashion. In evening wear ladies were most likely to be seen in sleeveless dresses with U or V shaped necklines. The middle years of the 1920′s is when the shortest skirts appeared and those came in at just below the knee no shorter. Fringe, feathers and beading were the desired trims.
In the 1930′s we moved away from the boyish look of the flapper to a much more feminine impression. Dresses were made to emphasize womanly curves, and the waistline returned to its normal position. Evening dresses were long and cut to drape and hug the woman’s form to the hips and then flared at the hemline for sweeping movements.
During the 1940′s fashion was enduring the war just like ever other aspect of life. Evening dresses were long but much less embellished as in earlier years. The wearing of formal gowns became less frequent. At the height of the war many Oscar attendee’s opted for cocktail dresses instead of gowns.
With the coming of the 1950′s women welcomed both flowing skirts, and fitted skirts. The main goal was to show off an “hour-glass” figure. Women sought a departure from wartime rationing of the last decade, and vibrancy in colors and styles.
Whatever style you end up choosing by choosing a vintage formal dress you are choosing to wear a piece of history.
