Which Natural Gout Treatment Should You Use?

Trying to get rid of gout can be exasperating.  Not only do you have to deal with the intense pain, but in many cases, you have to wait days for the pain to subside.   The quickest I have ever been able to stop an acute attack is about six hours with the edge being taken off in about twenty minutes.  This was after receiving a cortisone shot.  This is not a good long term solution and many doctors will not use cortisone on a regular basis to treat gout.  The best long term alternative is to use natural remedies.  But which natural gout treatment is the best to use?  We will look at five of the more common natural treatments.  The two categories we will use to judge will be 1) whether it lowers uric acid 2) does it provide pain relief.

Pineapple- 1) lowers uric acid through vitamin C, quercitin, and potassium.   Pineapple has almost sixty percent of your daily requirements for vitamin C which has the potential to reduce uric acid by up to fifty percent.  2) Lessens pain through bromelain.  Some people actually use quercitin and bromelain as supplements for gout therapy.   The downside for this treatment is if patient is on blood thinners, they will not be able to use pineapple as a remedy.

Water- 1) possibly lowers uric acid indirectly by creating more efficient digestion and kidney function.  2) Also indirectly lowers pain by helping the kidneys flush out uric acid crystals.

Alfalfa- 1) is thought to reduce serum uric acid.  Also thought to possibly neutralize it as well.  2)  This herb is used in arthritis, gout is a form of arthritis, by reducing inflammation and cleaning out the joint.  Downside to using alfalfa is if you are using steroidal medications such as with rheumatoid arthritis you should not use alfalfa.

Devil’s Claw - 1) This herb is used mostly to help reduce uric acid and prevent crystallization.  2)  This one is dependent on which study you look at.  Several studies support the assertion that devil’s claw does indeed reduce painful swelling, however, there is a study showing it had no anti-inflammatory effects that were comparable to prescription medications.

Cherries- 1) Cherries also contain quercitin, vitamin C, and potassium.  2) US Dept. of Agriculture studies from 2003 confirmed earlier studies in California that bing cherries lower painful inflammation. In fact, bing cherries reduced four inflammation markers in the study.  Not only that, the anthocyanins are thought to possibly reduce pain.  The antioxidants in the cherries help clean out the damage caused by gout.

So, which gout treatment is best?  While using cherries for gout seems to be the best treatment, you can use a combination of these treatments for the best effect.
