Wine Tasting For The Beginner…Spit or Not To Spit…
Wine comes with so many rituals. For many people these rituals can be enough to scare them off. But the rituals do have a purpose and they aren’t as difficult to learn and use as you might think.
One of the best known rituals is wine tasting. All the sipping, and swirling, and yes, spitting. What does it all mean? Here is a wine tasting for the beginner cheat sheet. These 3 simple steps are all you need to know to make you feel more comfortable with your wine tasting.
Sight
Tilt your glass away from you and look at the wine. Notice the color, intensity and clarity. Wine should never be cloudy. It should be clear. Don’t hold your glass up to a colored background though or all you’ll see is the colored background!
Smell
Again tilt your glass and swirl it. You want to let the wine mix with the air to get the most out of the aroma. Then stick your face in the glass. Don’t be shy. Take a deep breathe. Concentrate on the smells. Really try to focus on them. There can be many different layers of scents. Take your time and notice each one.
Taste
Now take a sip. Hold it in your mouth and gently swirl it around. You want to do this because your taste buds are located in the front, back and side of your tongue and each set of taste buds actually detects different flavors. By swirling you get the maximum flavor.
Again it’s important to concentrate. Try to relly notice the flavors. Savor them.
Wine tasting for the beginner doesn’t have to be an overwhelming experience. Just take some time and learn to enjoy your wine. Once you’ve done it a few times you’ll be amazed at the variety of smells and tastes that are in your favorite wine.
